Central Coast Humane Society:
Serving Animals in Lincoln County, Oregon

WHAT WE DO

The Central Coast Humane Society (CCHS) works closely with the Lincoln County Animal Shelter (LCAS) and have been responsible for many enhancements to this facility.  At this time, we are in the process of completing a brand new cattery addition to the existing County-owned building, as a gift.  (our funds are privately-donated and often restricted on what we can do)  Besides providing desperately needed office and utilitarian space, there will be 3 separate rooms for our homeless felines, as well as a Veterinary Room to eventually offer spay/neuter surgery.  After 30 years of having to confine cats to small individual cages, next to the noisy dog runs, they can finally roam freely in a bright, sun-dappled area, with fun furniture made by children in the community.  And, they'll be a few walls away from barking dogs.
CCHS built an additional 8 dog kennels to the existing shelter in 1999 to enhance the dog & puppies area, providing bright white tiles with fresh grout and it remains a friendly and clean place to adopt a canine companion.  These extra kennels provided more dogs to have longer stays in the shelter until they find their owner.  With the new cattery addition, we are also adding a new outside dog run, which will enhance the adoptability of every soul arriving.  We hope you will visit the new animal shelter in Newport soon.  Opening day is May 8th, 2004!
We also carry out many programs that are important to the companion animals of our community.  These include:

Spay/Neuter Program: Everyone qualifies for this program, designed to assist owners with the expense of having their pets altered. CCHS offers certificates for a $10 discount off the cost of spaying/neutering. Owners may select their own veterinarians, who will perform the surgery. We think altering your pet is the best thing you can do for him/her and we are very proud that last year CCHS helped alter over 2,000 animals in Lincoln County. Our certificates are available at:

Paws on the Sand, 1640 NE HWY 101, Lincoln City, 996-6019
Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 510 NE Harney, Newport, 265-6610
Pet Project/Health 101, 185 NW Hwy 101, Waldport, 563-6222

Feral Cat Program: As a result of irresponsible owners allowing their cats to breed indiscriminately, or people who thoughtlessly abandon cats, an enormous feral cat problem has arisen in the US. The American Veterinary Medical Association estimates that there are 63 million cat cats in the US and 60 million ferals, who often live short, miserable lives. In an effort to improve these animals' quality of life, CCHS will provide free spay/neuter for any feral cat brought to our attention.

Emergency Pet Food Bank: This program is designed to help the pets of county residents when owners are facing financial hardship. Owners can make a request by calling the Humane Society Thrift Store at 265-3719 or the county animal shelter at 265-6610.

Emergency Animal Medical Program: This fund provides a $30 subsidy to assist pet owners having difficulty paying for veterinary services. In the case of severe flooding which occurred in Tillamook County this winter, we worked with the Red Cross to assist many pets into temporary shelters while their owners were displaced.

                   Other Humane Endeavors

In addition to these formal programs, CCHS is actively involved in promoting the well-being of animals in our community in other ways. The organization helps pay for the investigation of animal abuse cases and offers substantial rewards for information leading the arrest and conviction of those responsible. We are currently working with Lincoln County government to fund an Animal Welfare Officer who will investigate animal abuse and neglect throughout Lincoln County.

CCHS has also actively supported the passage of humane legislation on the state and national levels. We supported Measure 18, which banned the use of dogs to bait and hunt bears and cougars, and helped stop Measure 34, which would have overturned Measure 18. CCHS strongly supports the new statewide initiative to ban steel-jawed leghold traps and certain inhumane poisons, and will be cooperating with other humane societies throughout the state to finally rid Oregon of these horrendously cruel and indiscriminate devices.
